Mohawk Valley Chorus will begin rehearsals for its annual Christmas concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at the Inman Center on Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam.

Registration for members, including those joining the chorus for the first time, begins at 7 during the first two weeks. After that, no one will be allowed to join the chorus until January, when work on music for the annual March Pops concert begins.

In order to improve efficiency and organization, the MVC board this spring approved a new registration policy that requires all singers to signup and obtain their music by the second rehearsal in each concert series. That means that no one will be accepted this fall after the Sept. 17 rehearsal.

MVC is a 100-voice community chorus that performs throughout the area each year. Members come from seven counties – Fulton, Montgomery, Schenectady, Saratoga, Schoharie, Albany and Hamilton – to sing under the direction of John H. Nethaway, a resident of Rome and retired Schalmont Central vocal music teacher. Alfred V. Fedak of Albany is accompanist.

The chorus is one of the few in the area that performs all kinds of music, from jazz and rock to standards, from sacred to Bach and Rutter, from show tunes to patriotic selections. At Christmas, for instance, the group will perform a wide variety of holiday music and feature the United Presbyterian Church Hand Bell Choir and one of the chorus’ three performing youth groups.

American folk music and a bluegrass band will be highlighted at the March concert and, in May, MVC will be joined by the Oneida Area Civic Chorale and a full orchestra for the annual Classics concert.
