About Mohawk Valley Chorus
The Mohawk Valley Chorus came into existence when two organizations combined in 1948; the Mohawk Mills Glee Club, first conducted in 1935 by John A. Gillies, and the Mohawk Carpet Mills Ladies' Glee Club, formed by director Reginald Harris in 1941. Early financial support came from Mohawk Carpet Mills, which became Mohasco Industries, Inc. During those years the Chorus performed in area concerts, Army camps, hospitals, televison specials, and War Bond drives.
The group incorporated as the Mohawk Valley Chorus in 1962, financially self-sufficient and under the direction of Carl M. Steubing. A highlight of those years was a World's Fair appearance in New York City. Subsequently the chorus was directed by Henry F. Sullivan.
The Chorus appeared in combined concerts with the Mendelssohn Club of Albany and the Musical Club of Troy, on television programs, and a Scotia's Freedom Park during the 1976 Bicentennial. In recent years it has been the recipient of grants from the New York State Council of the Arts.
Current director John Nethaway has held the position since 1979. Since then, special performances have been given with the Olympic Torch Bearers in Amsterdam, Proctor's Theatre, Amsterdam Bicentennial Celebration, the Depot Lane Singers of Schoharie, the Schenectady County Community College Chorus and Brass Ensemble, and the Oneida Area Civic Choral members.
In June 1994, the Mohawk Valley Chorus hosted the Oneida Area Civic Chorale for a joint presentation of Mozart's Requiem. This was followed by a two-week choral tour of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The chorus, joined by the SCCC Chorus, St. Cecilia Orchestra and soloists performed the Verdi Requiem in May of 1995. In the summer of 1996 a choral tour of England, Scotland and Wales was enjoyed by MVC and Oneida Area Civic Chorale Members.
During the 1997-1998 season, the Champlain Valley Chorale and the Pleasant Valley Chorale joined the MVC to perform Vivaldi's Gloria. During the summer of 1998, chorus members enjoyed a third tour of Europe, singing in the Netherlands, Paris and Belgium. The 1999 Christmas concert featured a performance of Amahl and the Night Visitors, a one act opera by Gian Carlo Menotti. During the summer of 2000, the Chorus performed in Germany, Italy and France.
