Our Dedicated Singers
Mohawk Valley Chorus has been an important part of the Amsterdam and greater Mohawk Valley arts community since 1948. The chorus was formed through the union of two earlier local glee clubs: the Mohawk Mills Glee Club, first conducted in 1935 by John A. Gillies, and the Mohawk Carpet Mills Ladies’ Glee Club, formed in 1941 by Reginald Harris. In 1962, the organization was incorporated as the Mohawk Valley Chorus under the direction of Carl M. Steubing.
Over the decades, Mohawk Valley Chorus has enriched the cultural life of the region through concerts, community performances, artistic collaborations, and singing opportunities abroad. Its legacy also includes a commitment to encouraging young singers through MVC Kids directed by Alison Wallace, which has been part of the chorus’s continued investment in the future of choral music.
Mohawk Valley Chorus has been shaped by generations of dedicated musical leadership, including John A. Gillies, Reginald Harris, Carl M. Steubing, Henry F. Sullivan, John H. Nethaway, and David M. Rossi. Through its long history, the chorus has remained committed to artistic excellence, inclusivity, and community spirit, and continues to be a proud and enduring part of the region’s cultural heritage.
